The court dismissed the defamation case against Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the BNP Standing Committee in Narail. A person named Ashiq Billah of Jadavpur village in Kalia upazila of Narail filed the case.

Judge Mehdi Hasan gave this order on Wednesday (October 16) evening.

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy’s lawyer and former BNP district president Iqbal Hossain Shikder confirmed this.

In the case, the plaintiff claimed that Gayeshwar Chandra Roy made a derogatory statement about a martyred intellectual at a BNP discussion meeting in Dhaka on 25 December 2015. Later it was circulated in various print and electronic media. Two days after the incident on December 27, the person named Ashiq Billah got angry after reading the news.

Later, Ashiq Billah became a plaintiff in this incident and filed a defamation case in the name of Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in the Narail Court of Sadar Amli on 29 December that year.

The court took cognizance of this and ordered the Narail Sadar police station to conduct an investigation. The police filed a report on October 29, 2016 accusing Gayeshwar in the court. The court dismissed the case on Wednesday, however, because the plaintiff did not appear in court for a long time.

Earlier, the two cases of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia were also dismissed.
