The Catalan Civil Society calls for a demonstration against the amnesty and self-determination

This Tuesday marks 6 years since Felipe VI’s speech to the nation after the Catalan independence challenge of 1-O. Five days after that, a million people took to the streets of Barcelona. They were called by the Catalan Civil Society against the independence movement. That day, the now High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, intervened. This association has once again called a demonstration for this Sunday against the amnesty in Barcelona.

The PSOE has already announced that it will not attend the demonstration. The slogan ‘Not in my name.’ will be produced on Sunday, October 8. Neither amnesty nor self-determination.’ Both Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal will be present. Some regional presidents have also confirmed their presence. From Civil Society they clarify that the attendees will do so in a personal capacity.

Elías Bendodo, national coordinator of the PP, confirmed the presence of Feijóo: “President Feijóo will attend the demonstration as another citizen, as a Spaniard more concerned about the events that are being experienced, possibly before an investiture of Pedro Sánchez based on an amnesty and a referendum in Catalonia”.

After confirmation that the PSOE will not be at the demonstration, Borrell will not appear in the photo. Nor will the leader of the PSC, Salvador Illa, who has been clear and forceful against a self-determination referendum. Illa has stated that if there have to be other elections, there will be, but that the referendum does not pass.

The amnesty, in the political focus

Since we learned the results of the general elections of 23J, the Catalan independence parties have gained a greater presence on the political board. Alberto Núñez Feijóo has not been able to be president of the Government. Now it is Pedro Sánchez’s turn after being proposed by the head of state.

The price of ERC and Junts does not stop rising. First they urged an amnesty, but now they are upping the ante. They take for granted an agreement with the progressive Government to amnesty those convicted of the process and now ask for steps towards self-determination. The PSOE makes it clear that it will negotiate under the constitutional framework.
