Mission of evangelization in Burundi: The Catholic Charismatic Renewal in action
Bujumbura, 17/07/2023 – In accordance with the social and security policies of Burundi, Catholic Charismatic Renewal [1] of Bujumbura embarked on a mission to bring the Barundi back to the Catholic faith. From July 11 to 14, 2023, an evangelization campaign was organized by the association at the Foyer de Charité in Bujumbura.
In the past, when Burundi was still governed by The Empire of Burundithe traditional state power structure of the Barundi, the Mwami (head of the people) had to demonstrate his loyalty to the ubungoma of the Barundi by simulating a romantic relationship with Mukakaryenda, the wife of Karyenda, the drum – Ingoma – sacred to the Barundi. The Barundi are a people strongly attached to ubungoma, to ubuntu.
Between 1920 and 1945, the Vatican and Belgium orchestrated un genocide contre les Banyama barundileading Karyenda’s disappearances and the Mukakaryenda dynasty [2]. Ruburisoni, the last Mukakaryenda, was forcibly converted to Catholicism. This crime against humanity affected more than a sixth of the Burundian population. Since then, a new Burundian Catholic elite began to emerge up to the present day.

[1] Catholicism is an exogenous colonial religion imported into Burundi by the White Fathers missionaries, notably the French priest Charles Lavigerie, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Catholicism was founded in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine of Rome, who became the first pope of the Catholic Church.
