The CEO of Microsoft comes with a golden tip for a successful career

by time news

Nadella joined Microsoft as a young engineer in 1992 and began to climb the corporate ladder step by step, which brought him after 22 years to the position of head of one of the most important companies in technology, writes CNBC, quoted by Business Store.

I distinctly remember walking into the Microsoft building thinking it was the most fantastic job on earth and I wouldn’t need anything else“, the CEO stated in an interview.

Instead of thinking about what he wants to do in the future, Nadella says he focused on excelling in the role he had at the time. One of the most important lessons he learned during his decades at Microsoft – and his “best career advice” – goes like this:

You cannot evolve if you do not believe that your evolution comes because of what you do”.

Rather than seeing your current job as an obstacle to achieving your professional goals, Nadella recommends viewing it as an opportunity to demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment to your work, as well as your willingness to learn.

There was never a moment when I thought that the job I had was just a temporary episode in my career. I always felt that what I was doing there was really important“, the CEO also declared.

The right attitude

Nadella’s career is a prime example of how this attitude can put you on the fastest track to a promotion or raise sooner than any five-year career plan can.

Throughout his tenure at Microsoft, Nadella had to constantly adapt to the teams he worked with and the divisions he led, while keeping pace with technologies that were evolving at breakneck speeds. He led the development of some of Microsoft’s complex products, including Bing and Xbox Live.

Don’t wait for the next job to do the job right. You have to give everything at the first opportunity“, said the head of Microsoft.

If you’re feeling stuck at work or struggling to find meaning in your work, Nadella has advice for that, too.

When he was 30 years old, a conversation with Doug Burgum, the current governor of the state of North Dakota, made him think about his purpose at Microsoft.

Burgum emphasized the importance of thinking about a deeper meaning of work, one that is more than transactional, given that we spend so much time at our workplaces.

This led Nadella to wonder: “Why am I at Microsoft? What gives me energy at Microsoft, day in and day out?

The motivation came, he said, from “curiosity, love for new ideas and the ability to turn them into reality, producing a positive impact on the world”.
