The Cercle d’Economia commemorates the centenary of Paseo Maristany, where the foundations of the association were laid

The Town Hall of Camprodon held this Saturday an act of recognition to the Economics Circleon the occasion of the centenary of the Maristany promenade from the locality of the Ripollès region.

This emblematic promenade was the place where, in the early 1950s, the foundations of what, in 1958, would become the Cercle d’Economia, were laid. The political context of that time did not allow an association, as the Cercle is today. For this reason, the Wild Card Clubwhich was officially a chess club, in order to openly debate without arousing the suspicions of the Franco regime.

In the summer of 1951, Carles Ferrer Salat y Joan Mas Cantíin a conversation on Paseo Maristany, concerned about the international isolation and the lack of freedoms that existed in Spainthey thought of create a forum to promote the discussion among young people who shared the same concerns.

The act of tribute was chaired by the mayor of Camprodon, Xavier Guitart, and councilor Maria Àngels Reixach and the former mayor, Esteve Pujol, also attended.

“More live than never”

Guitart has indicated that for Camprodon “it is an honor to remember that, in those dark years of our country, two young people had the initiative to create a association to debate ideas with the objective of organize Catalan society of that time”. The mayor of the town also wanted to highlight its current validity: “The Cercle d’Economia in 2023 is more alive than ever. It is appreciated that many people, selflessly, work so that things go well and to build a better society”

After the institutional act in the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall, the delegation moved to Paseo Maristany where the information panel on the history of this enclave was discovered, explaining that what we know today as Cercle d’Economia was created there.
