The Spanish Language and Culture Days for Spanish Students, which are held until next Wednesday, consist of writing workshops, microtheater, culture and oral expression and technologies applied to the teaching of Spanish, among others.

“There are now 599 million people who can communicate in Spanish,” said the academic director of the Cervantes Institute, Carmen Pastor, at the opening of the event.

«This positions Spanish as the fourth language in the global count of speakers. These are figures of an expanding language. “We continue to grow,” Pastor stressed.

According to the academic director, «in Africa there are almost two million students of Spanish as a foreign language, who are concentrated mainly in West Africa. In fact, many more students register in Sub-Saharan Africa than in North Africa.

On the list of the fifteen countries in which there are the most Spanish students in the world are six African countries: Ivory Coast, Benin, Senegal, Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

There are an approximate total of twenty-three million Spanish students in the world and it is the fourth most studied language among foreign students, according to data updated by the Cervantes Institute.

The conferences take place at the United States International University (USIU) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Carlos III University of Madrid, the Pompeu Fabra University, the Cervantes, the Spanish Embassy in Kenya and the USIU.

This is the first time that the conferences focused on students have been organized, since in other editions the attendees were mainly teachers.
