Earthquake in the trade union world: historically in the lead at the electrician EDF since the nationalization of 1946, the CGT lost its first place during the elections in the social and economic committees of the 48 establishments, which were held from 6 to November 13.

With 30.31% of the votes (- 4 points), the CGT is this time ahead of the CFE-CGC, which came in first with 33.08% (+ 4.5%) thanks to an alliance with Unsa. The CFDT comes third (16.63%, – 0.8 points), followed by FO (15.33%, stable).

“This is a historic victory for us, and one that will mark the history of EDF,” rejoiced with AFP Amélie Henri, national secretary of CFE-energy, for whom this crowns “the mobilization of the last four years on all subjects” as well as “all the negotiations that we also carried out on this mandate”.

Contesting the methods of the CGT

The CFE-CGC will nevertheless have to find alliances to obtain a majority on the group social and economic committee (CSEG) – the largest in France, with a budget of more than 400 million euros and 5,000 employees –, whose members must soon be designated by the elected representatives of the 48 establishment CSEs.

This victory for the executives’ union, in constant and regular growth since 2013, highlights not only the growing share of executives and supervisors within EDF, to the detriment of workers, but also the internal contestation of the CGT’s methods.

The powerful Federation of Mines and Energy (FNME-CGT) had notably been at the forefront of the fight against pension reform, which it had marked by strikes in power plants and power cuts.

Its general secretary, Sébastien Menesplier, also a member of the federal office of the CGT (the executive of the confederation), was notably heard on September 6 at the Montmorency gendarmerie (Val-d’Oise) on a power cut which, in March, deprived several thousand homes of Annonay (Ardèche), stronghold of Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt, of electricity.
