DECRYPTION – Beautiful old homes are not immune to the difficulties of the rest of the real estate market with price reductions of up to 25%. But quality goods or those displayed with a reasonable price hold up much better.

The banks no longer lend and the sellers are too greedy. These are the explanations that we hear from the mouths of home buyers and real estate experts to explain the crisis affecting housing. Despite their prestige, the castles, numbering around 40,000 in France, are no exception to the rule. “Some owners believed that, like properties located by the sea or exceptional properties in the city, castles would follow the inflationary trend. This is to forget that the châteaux market is less liquid“, explains Olivier de Chabot-Tramecourt, president of the Mercure Group, which sold more than a hundred castles in 2022 at an average price of 880,000 euros.
