The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General Salah al-Din al-Namroush, reported that there are units affiliated with them stationed inside the “Bukmash” area to support the Ministry of Interior at the Ras Ajdir crossing.
Al-Namroush explained in an intervention with Al-Ahrar that their forces will not be present at the crossing; but they will form a cordon to confront any emergency, and support the security services whenever they are asked to do so, according to him.
Al-Namroush said that work at the Ras Ajdir crossing is proceeding smoothly, after the completion of maintenance work, the opening of other passages, and the installation of some devices to speed up inspection operations.
100 days of closure
Yesterday, the Ras Ajdir border crossing was opened on Monday after more than 100 days of closure, following an agreement between the two countries.
This came in a joint press conference held by the Minister of Interior, Imad Trabelsi, and his Tunisian counterpart, Khaled Nouri, during which Trabelsi confirmed that the previous closure was aimed at organizing the crossing to end the security chaos.
According to Trabelsi, the plan to reopen the crossing included facilitating the movement of travelers between the two countries, with the provision of new inspection devices. Trabelsi confirmed that an official police force would secure the crossing from the Libyan side, noting that all workers there would be replaced.
The Minister of Interior confirmed that the problem of similar names that was hindering traffic between the two countries had been resolved, in coordination with Tunisian President Kais Saied.
For his part, Tunisian Interior Minister Khaled Nouri confirmed that the Ras Jedir crossing is open to all citizens and trade exchanges between the two countries.
The two sides agreed to work on opening the remaining crossings between the two countries, and Al-Tarabulsi vowed that they would not allow them to be exploited for the purposes of smuggling weapons and drugs.
In another press conference attended by Deputy Chief of Staff Salah Al-Namroush alongside Al-Tarabulsi, the latter revealed that the next phase will witness the opening and securing of the Ghadames-Dabdab crossing with the Algerian side, noting that it had witnessed smuggling operations from all regions.
Trabelsi expressed his readiness to officially work with the “armed forces” in the east of the country to secure the southern borders, vowing to end the smuggling of fuel and commercial goods between Tunisia and Libya.
Ras Jedir crossing was closed to passenger traffic on March 19, and its official opening was postponed three times, while it was partially opened to emergency humanitarian and diplomatic cases in mid-June.
