A Chinese Air Force unit recently evaluated the pilots of the country’s indigenous J-20 stealth fighter, testing their combat capabilities as part of their mission to protect national and security interests.

In this evaluation, Wang Hai’s unit, under Major General of the Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army of China, aims to test pilots’ ability to control air superiority through air combat, while flying the new generation of twin-engine fighter aircraft. The new pilots succeeded in their mission after successfully completing advanced flight maneuvers and practical weapons control scenarios.
“Continuous learning and improvement have become the key to victory for our group. Through learning, we can quickly control equipment, shape our combat capability, enrich our combat tactics, and train more pilots for the J-20,” said Peng Keshuai, a pilot with the unit.
According to pilot Yang Junzheng, as the first combat unit fully equipped with the new generation J-20 fighter in the Chinese Air Force, Wang Hai’s unit faced the urgent task of thoroughly testing the aircraft and making them combat-ready.
“The J-20 fighter should be viewed as a fighter jet and an air headquarters. Therefore, we need to not only train our pilots in combat skills, but we also need to ensure that they become qualified commanders,” he said.
Now, with the capabilities of its members enhanced after multiple air combat scenarios, Wang Hai’s unit has become a crucial talent training base for the Air Force.
The unit completed major missions including patrolling the air defense identification zone in the East China Sea, combat warning patrols in the country’s southern coast, patrolling around the island of Taiwan, and flying through the Bashi Channel and Tsushima Strait.
