The American giant specialized in semiconductors Broadcom has announced that it will install a microchip factory in Spain in which it will invest around 1,000 million dollars (about 900 million euros). It has not yet been revealed where this state-of-the-art factory will be located, which will be unique in Europe.

The company’s CEO, Charlie Kawwas, announced on his Twitter account that he is “excited” to announce his decision to invest in the Spanish semiconductor ecosystem under his Perte Chip semiconductor support program. “Thanks to Pedro Sánchez for his support and decision to build a more resilient global semiconductor value chain,” Kawwas said in his tweet.

Few data are known, neither about the location nor about jobs, but the first information indicates that the facility will create large-scale ‘back-end’ semiconductors, becoming the first plant in Europe of this type for the American giant. Sources from the Ministry of Economy assure that this decision plays a “strategic role in strengthening the microchip ecosystem in Spain.”

The announcement came after months of conversations between Kawwas and Sánchez. The investment may count on the support of the Perte Chip program, endowed with 12,250 million euros from European funds and with which Spain seeks to gain strength in a strategic sector in Europe.

The economic vice president, Nadia Calviño, applauded this “extremely good news” for the technology sector and pointed out that it is a sign of “the confidence of international investors in our country.” To questions from the media this Friday, he assured that this decision “puts Spain on the map of European countries that will have a production capacity for semiconductors and microprocessors”, which are fundamental elements for all industries today and that it is a key part of future technology.

Other giants landing in Spain

Calviño also indicated that this announcement “opens the door to other billion-dollar investments” that mean the creation of a lot of employment and bring “innovation and science” to our country. “Spain is getting on the train of the new digital economy,” he assured. “I hope that in the next few days we can have some other good news and that we are already beginning to see the results of this strategy to put Spain on the European chip manufacturing map,” said the vice president in statements after the presentation of the PSOE program.

This investment is added to that of other technology giants such as Cisco, which will set up its first European chip design center in Barcelona, and Intel, which will create a microchip design laboratory in which it will invest 200 million euros.

For its part, Broadcom is an American giant that has 20,000 employees and develops a wide range of software and semiconductor products. Its market capitalization exceeds 350,000 million dollars and is listed on the Nasdaq.
