This filmmaker, known for his roles in iconic films such as “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Green Book”, engaged in an in-depth dialogue discussing various aspects of his artistic career, which spans more than 30 years.

Referring to his collaboration with the Argentinian filmmaker Lisandro Alonso, who is also participating in this edition of the festival with his film “Eureka”, Viggo Mortensen praised the director’s openness to improvisation, speaking of the pleasure of having room to deviate from the original script.

As for the dichotomy between mainstream and independent films, Viggo Mortensen said that budget and shooting time were not significant concerns for him.

This Danish-American actor emphasized the importance of understanding and portraying character, regardless of the scale of the film.

On another note, the American actor, who has played roles in English, Danish, Spanish, French, Russian and Arabic languages, claimed that “if an actor has the right language, accent and appearance for a particular role, he should be able to take on the character without worrying about political correctness.”

This versatile artist (actor, director, screenwriter, producer…..) also revealed his method of preparing for roles by exploring the character’s past, explaining that he “imagines the birth and education of the character, adopting a holistic approach to character development.

The conversation with Viggo Mortensen, during the 20th Marrakech International Film Festival, was punctuated with extracts from the films in which this filmmaker had demonstrated his acting talent, including “Jauja” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

Trailers for films directed by Mortensen, including “Captain Fantastic” and “The Dead Don’t Die,” added another dimension to the cinematic event, offering glimpses into his directorial vision and storytelling skills .
