Marathon, the science-fiction first-person shooter developed by Bungie, It is available for free on Steam.

The first game in the trilogy was originally published for Apple’s Macintosh computers in 1994, followed by its sequel, Marathon 2: Durandal, in 1995, and a third installment in 1996, Marathon Infinity. These games were what put the studio on the map, half a decade before they achieved massive success by publishing Halo: Combat Evolved after allying with Microsoft.

The version that can be found on Steam is named Marathon Classic and has been developed by the Aleph One team, a fan-created engine based on the Marathon 2 source code.

According to the studio, this allows us to offer “authentic gameplay using the original data files”, but also quality of life improvements such as widescreen support, 3D filtering, positional audio and 60FPS interpolation or more, “in case the original seems too authentic to you.”

Bungie has confirmed that later versions of Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity, both developed by the Aleph One team, will also be published on Steam, but has not specified specific dates for this.

The reason for the publication on Valve’s digital distribution platform of these three classics is, logically, the future launch of their reboot.

The new Marathon will arrive on current generation consoles and PC in the form of a PvP extraction shooter with a sci-fi setting next year, after initially being planned for the end of 2024.
