The WhatsApp code scam is quite well known, and the first thing the cybercriminal does is obtain your phone number through some database.
You then use your phone number to register with WhatsApp, but in order for setup to be possible, the app sends a multi-digit code to that phone number.
Since cybercriminals do not have access to this code sent by SMS, they contact the victim to ask for this code by posing as an acquaintance.
