The collective of 11 presidential candidates plans to bring together its supporters this Friday, September 29 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Palace of Sports and Culture in Mahamasina. Several members of this Collective came to the Prefecture yesterday afternoon to submit a request for authorization for this event.

The prefect of the city of Antananarivo, Angelo Ravelonarivo, finds himself up against the wall with this request. Authorized or not, the response from the Prefecture is eagerly awaited and in both cases could cause serious tensions. The risk of unrest remains high given the current political situation. At the beginning of the month, Angelo Ravelonarivo already took the lead. In a letter of requisition, the prefect called for the general mobilization of mixed elements composed of the Army, the Gendarmerie and the National Police for a police operation and with a view to maintaining order and public security in Greater Tana . Since then, several elements of the police have been roaming the city center, in sensitive neighborhoods such as Analakely or near administrative buildings.

Recently, with the approval of the Prefecture, Andry Rajoelina held a political rally in the same place to announce his candidacy with great fanfare. The international community, for its part, released a press release after its meeting with Christian Ntsay to recall their attachment to fundamental freedoms, in particular the right to peaceful meetings and demonstrations, as well as to equal treatment of all candidates by the public authorities and the media.

However, this is a double-edged event for the collective of candidates. If the meeting is authorized and the opposition supporters are not there, it will be an admission of failure for these contenders for the supreme office.
