The screening team delivering a form to a woman who has come for screening

What you should know: For the good health of women, associations and women’s service clubs have no reservations. They go everywhere to serve them. And it is still the case with them. Indeed, gathered in the collective of Associations and Clubs Women’s Services, these women were, on Sunday, June 4, 2023, in the precincts of the church of Ste Rita where they screened for breast cancer for women wishing while indicating to them the gestures to make a success of the self-palpation. This action is part of the campaign that this collective launched on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, to help Beninese women know the state of health of their breasts early. This will allow them to be able to quickly benefit from advice and start treatment early in the event that the test turns out to be positive. When the team’s presence was announced, a good number of women did not need to be asked. They took the direction of the system set up to be tested. And it is with great joy that they left, proud to be negative in the test and to learn how to perform the gesture once at home. And according to them, it is a good action Dr. Hortense Kossou, President of the collective and her sisters have initiated.

What to remember about the self-assessment process: According to the members of the team who came to do the free screening for women at Ste Rita Church (on this Mother’s Day) the successful examination of a breast is done in 7 stages and this in any position (standing, sitting or lying down). To pass it, the woman must place her hand (left, if the left breast is to be examined) on the back of her neck, the fingers of the right hand clasped and placed flat on the breast under examination and palpate lightly but strongly the outer upper part of the concerned breast by practicing turning movements and going down to the lower outer part of this breast. She repeats the same examination for the inner lower part of the breast concerned, going up from the bottom towards the nipple. In three, the woman must repeat the same examination for the inner upper part of the breast. In this part, it can meet firm and fleshy tissues. It’s normal. She will then explore with the same light pressure and close the lower internal part of the breast concerned by applying rotating movements which must start from the contour of the breast and go up towards the nipple. In 5, the woman should palpate the center of the breast (region) under examination; then, gently pinch the nipple in search of a discharge (blood or other). Finally, you have to bring the arm (left since it is the left breast that is being examined) along the body and explore the armpit and the immediate surroundings in search of small nodules called lymph nodes. During these stages, the woman must be careful to notice whether she feels any induration (very hard skin) or the presence of a lump; if the nipple is leaking odd-colored fluid. Self-examination of the breasts should be done in postmenopausal women, every first day of the month. As for women who continue to have their period, it is on the 8th day of menstruation that they must self-palpate.

Moreover : It should be remembered that the collective is made up of the associations Afmb, Afbd, Pharmaction and the service clubs Inner Wheel (Doyen, Espoir, Porto-Novo, Bohicon), Zonta Club, Lion’s Club Camelias, Soroptimist International Club (Doyen, Amazone, Gazelle, Sika gold, Dove and Amethyst).
