After the grandstand inThe Parisian of 200 cosmetic surgeons calling for an end to the over-the-counter sale of hyaluronic acid, it is the turn of the National Council of the Order of Physicians (Cnom) to demand stricter regulation of aesthetic medicine in France. Laser, injections, hair transplants… “There is a real boom in medical procedures for aesthetic purposes and, concomitantly, a sharp increase in excesses related to this exercise, sometimes carried out by untrained health professionals, or even by non-health professionals”notes the professional body in a press release published Thursday, May 4.

Far from being trivial, “acts for aesthetic purposes, including in particular injections of fillers, can generate serious complications (burns, necrosis, etc.), with the risk, sometimes, of definitive aesthetic or functional sequelae”alerts the Order of Physicians, which therefore pleads for the creation of an inter-university training course for doctors. “Being a medical graduate does not make you competent in all areas, that of aesthetics is learned”insists Doctor Jean-François Delahaye, plastic surgeon and member of the Cnom.

Uniform training

In France, unlike cosmetic surgery, cosmetic medicine is not recognized as a specialty in its own right. “Today, only two categories of doctors can practice these acts: cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists”, recalls Doctor Delahaye. ENT, maxillofacial surgeons and ophthalmologists can also do it, “but only on the face and only with botulinum toxin”, says the doctor.

His fear? That these professionals are not numerous enough to cope with the “boom” of the sector, at the risk of letting charlatanism gain ground. “Plastic surgeons, twenty come out a year; dermatologists, 100, and they cannot devote themselves only to aesthetics. It is therefore not enough to meet the demand, which is increasing by around 15% per year.summarizes Dr. Delahaye.

Hence the position of the Cnom, for whom the creation of an inter-university training course would guarantee all patients the same quality of care and the same degree of safety, while increasing the number of practitioners. Focused on anti-aging medicine or cosmetology, several diplomas already exist, but the Order of Physicians does not recognize them, ” in particular because these training courses only depend on a single center and are therefore not standardized across the territory. »

Social networks and influencers in the viewfinder

The Cnom also asks the authorities to reserve the delivery of fillers to doctors only. “Injectable fillers are medical devices and must be the subject of a CE certificate of conformity”says the organization.

Also in its sights: social networks, the privileged showcase of self-proclaimed practitioners. Thus the “Sisters lips”, two Rennaises sentenced Wednesday, May 3 by the court of Metz to ten months in prison suspended and 500 € fine for illegal practice of medicine and concealed work. The two sisters, who offered hyaluronic acid injections at very low prices, advertised on Instagram. “We have just sent a letter to the presidents of the various social networks to encourage them to review their practice., in particular with regard to influencers, says Dr. Delahaye. These people are aimed at young people in a moment of construction and of particular fragility, they must be protected. »
