Eliecid Ávila, councilor of the Colombian municipality of Tuluá (southwest), died in the early hours of this Tuesday after suffering an attack day before, a few hours after assuming, for the third time, a seat in the local council, as reported by the authorities.

“Councilman Eliecid, we regret to inform, lost his life. There is an investigation underway by the Police, with its intelligence team (…) We have already identified the person who committed the murder,” stated the director of the institution, General William Salamanca, to journalists.

The murderer, according to the officer, is apparently “a minor person which unfortunately was exploited by crime in Tuluá”.

The attack occurred in that municipality that makes up the department of Valle del Cauca when Ávila was celebrating the New Year with his family in front of his brother’s house.

“Two subjects arrived at that place and without saying a word opened fire on the official,” said Valle del Cauca Police Commander, Colonel Oleskyenio Florez, on Monday.

For this reason, the councilor, who is a member of the Conservative Party, he was taken “to one of the city clinics”where he died this Tuesday.

According to the Institute of Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz), a faction of the Central General Staff (EMC), the largest dissident of the former FARC, operates in Tuluá; La Oficina, the largest criminal group in that municipality, and other local gangs.
