At the time when Phil Fowden scored his last goal against Brentford in the 23rd round of the Premier League for 1:3, he formed the most scoring round in the history of the league – 45 goals scored.

The only teams that failed to book this weekend were West Ham and Sheffield United.

Otherwise, another record was broken during the round. On Saturday, 26 goals were scored in 5 Premier League games – the most in one day.

This record was most strongly inflated by the 4:4 draw between “Newcastle” and “Luton”.

2023-2024 for the English league is likely to become the season with the most goals in history. So far, 730 goals have been scored in 228 games, which makes a statistical 3.20 goals per game.

For comparison, during the last championship, 1084 goals were scored in 380 matches, or an average of 2.85.

Never before in a Premier League season have more than 3 goals per game been scored on average.

From a statistical point of view, however, the English championship is not so much ahead of the others in terms of average number of goals compared to the rest of Europe.

The German Bundesliga averages 3.18 goals per game, while the Dutch Eredivisie and La Liga average 3.21 and 2.51 goals respectively.

It might seem like there isn’t that much of a difference between Europe’s top leagues, but the Premier League is the only one to have made such a huge leap from last season.

Last season, the so-called best league in the world scored an average of 2.85 goals per game, and so far they are scoring 3.20. Where does this difference come from?

The answer is that the 20-team league simply plays more football.

At the start of the season, a directive was introduced to the referees that they must add exactly the amount of time lost by half-time, unlike previous years with minimal added time.

Statistics show that this season, the Premier League averaged the most added time per game compared to all other leagues – 11 minutes and 41 seconds per game.

This added time helps teams score more goals by tiring defenders more and leaving more room for error.

So far this season, 67 goals have been scored after the 90th minute. Since there has been a goal stat after 90 minutes, the record is 72, which is most likely to be bettered this season.

The teams that benefit the most from this extra time are Arsenal and Liverpool, who have scored 8 goals each after the 90th minute so far.
