TRENTO. The “confident” capercaillie from Val di Fiemme, captured by forestry personnel on February 7, has been rehabilitated. The specimen had become the star of selfies and videos – one of which was of the biathlon champion Dorothea Wierer – posted on social networks for his appearances on the ski slope at Passo Lavazé.

The capercaillie – the Province of Trento recalls in a note – had caused concern for its excessive familiarity with humans. After careful evaluation and with the favorable opinion of the Provincial Wildlife Observatory, the forestry staff, supported by the biologist specialized in grouse Luca Rotelli, had proceeded with the capture and translocation operation on February 7.

The animal was equipped with VHF radio collar to monitor its well-being and movements, which have been studied by the Trentino Forestry Corps and the Wildlife Service.

Now the capercaillie has recovered his instinctive detachment from human beingsessential for its survival. “In case of sighting of a capercaillie with unusual behavior, people are invited to report it: the staff of the Trentino Forestry Corps and the Wildlife Service will evaluate the most appropriate intervention”, communicates the Province of Trento.
