On December 15, 1991, São Paulo Futebol Clube became champion of São Paulo after beating Corinthians in two games. The first, a week earlier, Tricolor won 3-0, with three goals from star player Raí. The second, playing with the advantage of even losing during regular time and drawing in extra time, ended 0-0 after 90 minutes – which ensured the state trophy went to Morumbi.

The São Paulo team, who had already won the Brazilian Championship in the first half of the year in an unquestionable campaign, celebrated their second title in the season that was only the starting point of the club’s golden phase in the early 90s.

PRÊAMBULO

And this journey actually began after the team’s disastrous campaign in Paulistão in 1990, where the club finished in 15th place among 28 participating clubs (it is always worth mentioning that There was NO relegation established by regulation in this edition). Later that year, Telê Santana arrived at Tricolor and, reviving the esteem and good performance of the athletes, led the squad to runner-up in the national championship.

In the first phase of the 1991 state championship, Tricolor competed in the yellow series, alongside lesser clubs due to the strange system created by the Arbitration Council. This arbitration, however, prevented a change of tables by the President of the FPF at the time, Antoine Gerbran, who wanted to tear up the 1990 tournament regulations and demote 14 clubs to the Special Division (2nd Division) by mere will – even though he had no authority to do so, as Resolution 17/1986 of the National Sports Council (maximum sports entity in Brazil in the period by Decree-Law 6251/1975).

THE PAULISTÃO OF 1991

Within the four lines, with the ball rolling, right away they went 19 unbeaten games, with 13 wins and 6 draws. The only stumble, in the entire competition, happened only against Inter de Limeira, on October 9th – 4-1 for the team from the interior in Morumbi.

São Paulo, however, did not lose pace and finished the initial phase in first place in the yellow series, with 42 points gained, 50 goals scored and an impressive balance of 30!

In the second phase, Tricolor faced three other clubs from the green group: Palmeiras, Guarani and Botafogo and, after six rounds undefeated, once again achieved first place in the group, with three wins and three draws, but tied on points and balance. of goals with Palmeiras. The Morumbi team qualified for having the best campaign in the first phase, as predicted by the regulations, but would also qualify based on the number of goals scored – the third tiebreaker criterion traditionally used at that time (13 to 11).

THE DECISION

The final two matches of Paulistão in 1991 were at Morumbi, always with more than 100 thousand fans present. In the first game, a show by Raí, remembered in this special text.

With the immense advantage acquired for the second clash, Tricolor entered the field calmly on that rainy afternoon and managed the favorable scenario just waiting for the referee’s final whistle to celebrate with the São Paulo fans!

This had been the fourth state victory over the rival, precisely in the edition that marked the 60th anniversary of the first occasion (Paulistão in 1931 – the other times: 1957 and 1987).
