The consequences of a low-carbohydrate diet

by time news

The low-carb diet has become very popular in recent years. More and more often there are success stories about people who have lost tens of kilos following this diet.

The diet itself consists of one simple rule: you choose carbohydrate-conscious meals and limit this to a number of only 50 to 100 grams of carbohydrates per day. Everything else can be eaten. This makes pasta and bread, for example, out of the question. Although the diet is very popular right now, experts are not thrilled about the consequences of this diet. Because what happens to your body if you eat little to no carbohydrates?

Eating no carbohydrates at all is a bad idea

Some people are very radical in the diet and cut out all carbohydrates. However, this is a bad idea. As soon as you stop eating carbohydrates at all, this also means that you have to eliminate a lot of vegetables and fruit from your diet. As a result, there are few foods left to eat healthy and varied. In addition, you need carbohydrates to get energy. If you don’t eat any carbohydrates at all, you can experience many complaints because of this. Think of dizziness, extreme fatigue, headache, and so on. The Dutch Health Council therefore advises that people should be able to get at least 40 percent of their energy from carbohydrates.

weight loss

The low-carbohydrate diet has of course become so popular. It has one big advantage: you lose a lot of weight quickly. Because your body gets little or no carbohydrates anymore, it tries to find other sources to get energy. First, it is checked whether glucose can still be burned. If this is not the case, the fat in the body will be used.

Of course, this sounds like music to your ears. However, you have to realize that as soon as you pick up your old diet again or at least start consuming carbohydrates in a ‘normal way’ again, the weight will be replenished very quickly. This gives you the so-called ‘yo-yo effect’. You can prevent this by following the keto diet for the rest of your life, but few people really last that long.

If you want to lose weight, it is therefore better to adjust their lifestyle. Make different choices and thereby gradually lose weight. This way you slowly arrive at a healthy weight and it is also much easier to maintain. Of course, a low-carb dish every now and then is not a bad choice, but it is not a good idea to leave it alone all the time.

In ketose

Another consequence of the keto diet is the bad breath you get. This is because the diet puts your body in a so-called ketosis. The amount of glucose and fats are quickly affected. This increases the amount of ketones in the blood and can make the breath smelly.
