The project “Construction of Jānis Čakste Street” is divided into two phases. In the first phase, the construction of Jānis Čakstes gatve from Valdeķu street to Ziepniekkalnas iela will be implemented, and in the second, the construction of Jānis Čakstes gatve from Vienības gatve to Valdeķu iela will be implemented.
The City Council expects that, when implementing the project, the network of surrounding streets will be arranged, ensuring a comfortable flow of traffic. In the nearby residential areas, safety will increase, as the flow of car traffic passing through will decrease. Also, the project will ensure the arrangement of freight transport transit traffic on the left bank of the Daugava.
Also, this project and the Kundziņsala overpass, the construction of which is already underway, will ensure the relief of the city center from the transit of freight transport, according to the city council.
At the moment, preparatory works, mobilization and traffic organization measures have been carried out at the facility – installation of road signs and construction of temporary roads. Tree felling has started, while protective measures have been installed for the trees to be preserved. It is planned to start driving test piles in the coming days.
The Chairman of the Riga City Council Vilnis Ķirsis (JV) states that the new part of the bridge will connect Bauskas Street with the Jelgava Highway, and this will significantly improve traffic, making it safer and more efficient, especially for servicing industrial zones and freight transport.
Main streets and overpasses will be built in the section of Jānis Čakste gatve from Valdeķu street to Ziepniekkalns street, including connections and access roads of local streets and their overpasses, pedestrian and bicycle paths, pedestrian tunnels at Līvciema street and at Padures street.
The project will also build and place means of traffic organization – traffic lights, road signs, markings, pedestrian crossings and bus stops on Valdeķu and Ziepniekkalnas streets, as well as parking spaces on Ozolciema street.
At the final stage of the works, beautification works will be carried out by planting trees along Valdeķu, Ozolciems and Mālu streets, at the Ziepniekkalnas street exit and Jānis Čakste gatve, as well as installing benches and anti-noise walls.
In the section of Jānis Čakste gatve from Vienības gatve to Valdeķi street, main streets and overpasses will be built, including connections and access roads of local streets and their overpasses, pedestrian and bicycle paths, as well as means of traffic organization – traffic lights, road signs, markings, pedestrian crossings, bus stops Ozolciema Street and parking spaces on Ozolciema Street.
During the works, long-term traffic restrictions are possible, which the municipality will inform about separately.
Project costs are planned at 122,732,479 euros. Of these, 60,185,896 euros will be co-financed by the Cohesion Fund, and 62,546,583 euros will be financed by the municipality.
