Hundreds of citizens thronged the Ashkelon beaches yesterday (Tuesday) in order to collect some of the items that were in the containers that were dumped on the beach. Today, some of them have already started selling the items on social networks and offering jewelry, bedding and other consumer products for sale. This morning the municipal workers began to clean the beaches of what was left of them.

The containers, in which baby equipment, toys and disposable utensils fell into the sea and washed ashore. A total of nine containers fell into the water, six of which reached the shore. Security guards arrived at the scene to guard the containers, but despite this they were broken into and looted by hundreds of people, some of whom came to the scene in trucks and loaded industrial refrigerators and kitchen counters.

Hours after the containers arrived at the beach, even in the hours of darkness, there was a rush of people arriving at the beaches in Ashkelon trying to take items. “One person told us that he came to get a refrigerator. There is a family that came with eight people and they are breaking the containers. This is a once-in-a-generation event,” said one of the people who arrived at the scene. The police arrived at the scene to hand out reports to the many people who come with vehicles to the beach.

The Municipality of Ashkelon reported: At this time, employees of the Municipality of Ashkelon are working to clean the beaches of the city where various items from containers that broke off from a ship were washed away yesterday due to the stormy weather. The evacuation work is carried out both by cleaning workers and by heavy tools that move the items that were washed away to the beach.
