Hapoel Umm Al Fahem surrendered yesterday (Thursday) in the opening round of the National League to Hapoel Afula 2:0, but that was not the big story of the match, as in almost every meeting between the two teams that used to host their games in the same stadium and over time developed a certain rivalry. This time, the host Afula played the national anthem before the start of the game while the visiting fans booed during the song.
The one who commented on the phenomenon is the Minister of Culture and Sports, trooper troops, who commented on the event: “The boos chanted yesterday by Umm Al Fahm fans during the national anthem deserve all condemnation. This is the Israeli league and anyone who chooses to be a part of it should respect what has been practiced in it for years and certainly the national anthem of Israel. I appeal to the management of the group to act decisively against this contemptible behavior of some of its fans. Don’t legitimize your silence.”
As you may remember, last season there was a big confrontation between the two teams when Afula won 2:3 over Umm Al Fahm, during which some Umm Al Fahm fans rioted, threw objects on the grass and broke chairs (“The field became a battlefield, the damage is enormous”). Following these events, Ahmed Abu Alam’s team was punished with a home game without an audience and a NIS 10,000 fine.
