Faced with concerns about inflation, the executive wants a better “sharing of value” between companies and their employees. While negotiations have started with the social partners, the latest statistics on the financial situation of French companies provide concrete information likely to shed light on the debates.

In 2022, the margin rate of non-financial companies fell sharply: on average over the year, it reached 31.4% of value added compared to 34.2% in 2021, according to data published by INSEE and the Banque of France. “On the whole, the situation is not bad”, however observes the economist Daniel Cohen in a recent column in “L’Obs”. In fact, their margin rate has on average returned to the level before the health crisis. 2021, on the other hand, had been an exceptional year with profitability boosted by the presidential “whatever the cost”.
