Mass Displacement in Israel Leaves 125,000 Evacuees in Limbo

Residents of Arab al-Aramshe, a village next to Israel’s border with Lebanon, found themselves 44 miles south, in Nazareth, as nearly 800 residents were evacuated due to the risk of attacks by the militant group Hezbollah. The mass displacement has led to 125,000 people being evacuated, marking it as the largest in Israel’s history. Their homes in towns in the south near the Gaza Strip and in the north have become too risky due to attacks and exchanges of fire with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

The Israeli government is currently accommodating evacuees in 280 hotels and guesthouses, providing food, makeshift schools, medical clinics, and recruiting trauma counseling specialists arriving to provide help. Adeeb Mazal, community manager for Arab al-Aramshe, expresses his worries about receiving enough aid to pay for accommodations and the mental health of the evacuees, especially as the threat from Hezbollah still looms large.

Basic schooling and cultural programs are also being re-created at more distant hotels where evacuees settle, providing people a place to try and piece together a new normal. For residents like Lea Raivitz from Bar’am less than 1,000 feet from the border with Lebanon, the biggest worry is the erosion of their communal culture, as the evacuation lengthens.

Despite some hoping to return home, many are wary of the threat still being posed by Hezbollah. As Israeli official assure that the military is constantly monitoring the situation on the Lebanese border, recent attacks and threats have put the evacuees on high alert. For residents like Asaf Hamawy from Kiryat Shmona, a once-bustling border city now virtually deserted due to rocket strikes, the feeling of safety is largely lost. Especially with the concerns of Hezbollah’s use of more powerful artillery and the potential for escalation.

A video released by militants has depicted a frightening possibility – a multi-pronged ground attack by Hezbollah fighters entering northern Israel. Without assurance that such an attack can be repelled, the residents remain in limbo, unsure of when they will be able to return to the lives they once knew.
