A report prepared by Zeres Lawyers concludes that the cost of sick leave due to psychological problems will exceed 30,000 million euros in the year 2023 in Spain, more than two points of the Gross Domestic Product, if the current trend continues.
The study explains that the number of people on leave due to Temporary Disability due to Common Contingencies (ITCC), as leave due to accident or non-occupational illness is growing, as well as the cost that these leaves represent to companies , Social Security and, in general, for the country’s economy.
“It has done so between 2021 and 2022 and everything indicates that in 2023 it is going in the same direction, following a constant that can be observed throughout the last decade,” they explained from the law firm.
Likewise, the report shows that the average incidence of temporary disability processes due to Mental and Behavioral Disorders (TMC) registers an upward trend for all age groups, with an increase of 17.36%, since the year 2015 to 2021, according to a study by the Fundación Mutua Madrileña de Prevención (Fremap).
The labor lawyer expert in sick leave for psychological reasons at Zeres and director of Zeres Abogados, Fabián Valero, explained that the problems of anxiety and generalized stress in Spanish society have an important part of their origin at work and the work environment, a situation that “has worsened significantly” since Covid-19.
