The World Bank estimates that the cost of rebuilding Ukraine will reach 411 billion dollars. The report released yesterday (Wednesday) provides detailed data on the cost of Russia’s war in Ukraine: at least 9,655 civilians have been killed, including 465 children. Nearly 2 million homes have been damaged; more than one in five public health facilities have been damaged. And 650 ambulances have been damaged or completely destroyed .

In total, the World Bank has so far calculated direct damage of 135 billion dollars to buildings and infrastructure, without considering wider economic damage. The cost of cleaning up the ruins of the war alone will cost at least 5 billion dollars.

The damage could have been even worse if not for the strong defense that the Ukrainian forces put together very quickly. Anna Bjerda, the vice president of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia, said in a conversation with journalists, that the most serious damage is in the front line areas of Donetsk, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Kherson.

Russia’s invasion destroyed 15 years of economic progress in Ukraine, slashed Ukraine’s gross domestic product by 29% and drove 1.7 million Ukrainians into poverty. The assessment was carried out by the Government of Ukraine, the World Bank, the European Commission and the United Nations. The findings are intended to guide financing planning for Ukraine’s recovery.
