According to the WHO, obesity is responsible for 41 million deaths each year.
A correct diet is the basis for preventing chronic diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Although Mexico is the country with the highest consumption of fruits and vegetables in the world, it is also one of the leaders in obesity.

Food is the basis of health because from what is ingested various diseases and illnesses can be prevented or acquired. In fact, it is quite common for doctors to recommend the consumption of fruits and vegetables to their patients. A seemingly simple practice is enough to have a better quality of life.

In this vein, over the past decades the world has gone from malnutrition to obesity. Both extremes are equally dangerous and have their origin in the diet adopted by a large part of the population.

The costs of obesity

When an inadequate diet is combined with a sedentary lifestyle, there are consequences such as increased body mass. Beyond the aesthetic part, it is a condition that is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a disease. In addition, the consequences can be quite serious.

In fact, according to the highest health body, it is responsible for 41 million deaths annually. It is also the leading cause of deaths from Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases (CNCDs).

Diet for adults and children

Now, according to the international food guidelines both adults and children 10 years and older are recommended to consume at least 400 grams of fruits and vegetables each day or five servings of 80 g each.

In this way, it is indicated that it is possible to prevent chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity. For its part, in the case of children from two to five years old, the indication is to eat at least 250 grams a day, and if they are from six to nine years old, at least 350 grams a day.

The countries with the highest consumption of fruits and vegetables in the world

On the other hand, based on the macro-survey carried out by Statista Consumer Insights This 2023, the nations that have a higher consumption of these two types of food were obtained.

Although it was only applied to adults from 18 to 64 years of age, the first position is shared by Mexico and Argentina. In each one it was obtained that 86 percent of the population has a regular consumption of fruits and vegetables.

While around eight out of 10 respondents in Spain and Italy, countries that follow the Mediterranean diet, characterized, among other things, by a high consumption of fruits and vegetables, said the same thing. Instead, levels drop to two-thirds in the United States and 60% or less in China and Japan in Asia, where the fruit is quite expensive.

On the other hand, beyond what the survey indicates, the biggest paradox is that despite the habitual consumption of fruits and vegetables in MexicoIt is also one of the leading countries in obesity and overweight. With this in mind, diet must also be accompanied by practices such as constant exercise to achieve optimal health.
