New Delhi – Relief to Aam Aadmi Party in the case related to Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor election. The Supreme Court said that the members nominated by Lt.Governor cannot vote. The contention of the Lt. Governor and the Municipal Corporation was rejected. With this, the AAP-BJP dispute that has been going on for almost two months has come to an end.
The Lt. Governor has nominated a total of 10 people to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Experts in various fields are nominated to assist in the governance of the corporation. BJP and AAP argued that they have the right to vote. AAP alleges that the BJP is trying to sabotage the mayoral elections by giving them the right to vote. AAP had won more seats than the BJP in the municipal elections held in December.
AAP strongly opposed council members appointed by Lt. Governor VK Saxena coming to cast their votes in the mayoral election. Following this, the election was postponed three times. After this, AAP’s mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi approached the Supreme Court. The verdict was delivered by a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. According to the court verdict, the deputy mayor should be selected only after the election of the mayor.
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal said that the Supreme Court verdict is a victory for democracy. After two and a half months, Delhi will have a new mayor. Kejriwal said that the Supreme Court verdict has shown how unconstitutional things are being implemented in Delhi by the Lt. Governor and the BJP. There are total 250 wards in Delhi Municipal Corporation. The current party standings are AAP-134 and BJP-105.
