Debt officer

A new phenomenon in the judiciary is the debt officer. For a large group of people it is becoming increasingly difficult to survive financially. Often they do not know where to get help. “The debt officer forms a link between the judiciary and municipal debt assistance,” says Frank Knaap, coordinating debt officer at the District Court of The Hague.

Location for debts

“The judge is a place to find debts,” says Robine de Lange. “Many people come to us who sometimes have so much debt that they can no longer look over it. We want to ensure that those people seek help sooner to get rid of their debts and that they do not incur new debts afterwards.” .”

Debt officer Frank Knaap: “We are all human beings. Fortunately, so is the judiciary. If there is an indication that there are several debts and those people do not know where to go, why not give them a push in the right direction? ” In the future, all courts will deploy debt officers.
