New technologies advance at breakneck speed and, like all coins, they have their heads and tails. The benefits they provide to society are diverse, quick access to information, breaking space-time barriers, increased entertainment or job creation, among many other things. Among the problems is one in particular: cybercrime.

This matter, which comes to be those crimes that are committed through the Internet or a device connected to the network that violates the user’s security, affects thousands of people in Castilla-La Mancha. According to the latest balance of the National Institute of Cybersecurity (Incibe), last year 116,078 vulnerable devices exposed on the Internet in an unwanted way or to malicious software were detected in the region.

From Interpol they assure that “cybercriminals are increasingly agile and better organized, as demonstrated by the speed with which they exploit new technologies, and the way in which they adapt their attacks and cooperate with each other in new ways.”

Many of these criminals take advantage of digital transformations “to attack, through their weak points, networks, infrastructures and computer systems”, having enormous economic and social repercussions, “both for governments, companies or individuals”. , they explain in the International Police Organization.

When talking about cybercrimes, these can be both “those linked to cybersecurity, these are against data or computer systems that violate their integrity, confidentiality and availability” and those related to “traditional crimes, but committed through digital media,” he explains. the lawyer and legal assistant, Raquel Rivillas.

Cybercrimes “are classified in the Penal Code”, the crimes that most affect citizens being fraud or social engineering “these are phishing, smishing, vishing or carding” which consist of “stealing information through emails, text messages (SMS), phone calls or forged credit cards,” says Rivillas.

In addition, “telematic thefts and cyberbullying” occur frequently on the Internet. It is worth noting the computer attacks, called cyberattacks, such as “the one suffered by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in 2021 due to a ransomware attack”, malicious software that prevents the user from accessing their computer or personal files, highlights the lawyer .

The most repeated Internet crime is credit card fraud, with 2,898 cases detected in the region, according to the latest data published by the Ministry of the Interior. In the digital sphere, “everyone who makes use of technology is a potential target of cybercrime,” says cybersecurity consultant Guillermo Talavero.

“Depending on the use and your level of experience” some people will be more vulnerable than others. Teenagers, for example, are more susceptible to “falling for online scams” or being “victims or perpetrators of cyberbullying” due to their lack of privacy on social media. Children and older people frequently suffer from malware, “because their device is not well configured,” concludes the consultant.
