Barely a month has passed since the inauguration of the sixth Netanyahu government and the pace of events continues to shake Israeli society, when in the spotlight The issue of the legal reform that seeks to change the balance between the Knesset and the government vis-a-vis the Supreme Court, and as the depth of the reform, so the depth of opposition.

What started with point protests, expands to demonstrations with tens of thousands of people throughout the country, and continues to significant circles of influence such as senior officials in the legal system and the world of economics.

True, a significant number of opponents of the reform are clearly identified as opponents of the government in general, including figures seen in the Balfour protests two years ago. For them, any step related to Netanyahu and any good initiative designed to fix a real problem – will encounter criticism only because of its connection to the right-wing camp.

The question of what is happening is that the circle of criticism is also increasing including personalities who are difficult to ignore “and cancel” because of a political position. For example, senior economic figures who were once close to Netanyahu, and now stand against him? Or when the current Governor of the Bank of Israel expresses concern about possible consequences for Israel’s economy?

And what about the jurist Prof. Alan Dershowitz, who is considered a personal friend and sympathizer of Netanyahu, who speaks out against the scope of the planned legal change, among other things because of the fear that it will harm the ability to protect IDF officers and soldiers abroad?

Apparently Netanyahu is not emitting pressure and expressing his confidence in the implementation of the legal reform, but the mere convening of the hasty press conference on Wednesday indicates that he understands that there is a problem from an unexpected direction.

When the issue was legal and administrative, he had good answers and the backing of the right-wing camp. Now that more and more questions are emerging about the lateral consequences for the future of the State of Israel, it is possible that Netanyahu “Mr. Economy” is looking at the situation in a new light.

First mission accomplished

The main success of the right-wing camp is in the fact that there is a relatively broad consensus on the need to rebalance the authorities, and the undermining of the activist concept initiated by Aharon Barak.

Now the parties Yesh Atid, the State Camp and Israel Beitenu also agree that it is possible to make changes in the fabric of the relationship between the Knesset and the High Court, and that there is a problem in leaving the situation as it is.

Right from the beginning, the chairman of the state camp, Benny Gantz, opened the door to negotiations, and this week, opposition leader Yair Lapid also expressed his willingness to hold talks to find an agreed outline.

Now it remains to find the point of broad agreement necessary to carry out such a dramatic move that will affect the State of Israel and carry out a second legal revolution in it.

Although the first revolution was hidden from the eyes of the public, it was done in an indirect way and slowly eroded the power of the elected officials, but the second must be carried out in a transparent, clear way and one that sees all the needs of the state, and not just the needs of the moment.

The coalition may have succeeded in convincing the public of the need to make changes in general, but the opposition, on the other hand, highlighted the problematic aspects of some of the reform’s sections and especially its timing, which is difficult to separate from Netanyahu’s sentences and Deri’s disqualification.

Political deadline: this is the deadline for approving the budget

The fact is that Binyamin Netanyahu has rejected and blocked changes in the judicial system many times, but now he finds himself facing a coalition that can seemingly force almost any regime change on him.

And so this is the place to say: even if the program itself is good, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to compromise or at least bring it in a gradual and measured way.

To give a chance to the president’s initiative

When the terminology between the parties is only getting more official day by day, the public protest is increasing and the opposition coalition is getting higher on the tree, we must not give up the option of the president’s house as a bridging factor.

In recent weeks, President Yitzhak Herzog has been trying to be the “responsible adult”, this in light of the fact that he has sympathy and respect from all sides. Although Herzog himself said that he is not sure of his ability to bridge the issue, this could also be the ladder that Netanyahu may be looking for.

The right has already won the battle for consciousness against the excessive power of the judicial system, now it can find the balance point that will ensure the required change, without breaking the tools.
