Once the pandemic anxiety was over and two years had gone by unluckily, the centers of the dali foundation they return to exhibiting muscle and, better yet, impact benefits. Total, 4.5 million euros in 2022, 15.76 percent more than in 2019, as a result of the recovery of the activity of the museums of Figueres, Portlligat and Púbol, and the almost normalization of tourist flows.

In the cash of the season, income of 15.3 million euros and expenses of 10.7 confirm the change in trend and leave a surplus that, as explained by the president of the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation, Jordi Mercader, will be allocated, among other things, to the maintenance of heritage, technological adaptations and the purchase of new construction. Above all, Mercader points out, graphic work of the Empordà genius. «Acquiring oil paintings is increasingly complicated. If we could, we would buy ‘La Madonna de Portlligat’ or the ‘Christ of San Juan de la Cruz’, of course, but there is no money for that », he ventures.

The one also known as Christ of Glasgow will be, precisely, one of the protagonists of the year with an exhibition that will open its doors in November 2023 and that the Foundation wants to turn into one of the cultural phenomena of the season. “No more people will come because we have the Christ, so it is a genuinely cultural act,” said Mercader. All in all, recovering the public and reaching the levels of 2019, when more than a million people passed through the three Dalí centers, is one of the pending subjects of an institution that closed 2022 with 817,097 visitors. The objective, Mercader advances, is to recover the flow of Chinese, Japanese, American and Italian visitors. Right now, 36 percent of visitors come from France and 26 percent from Spain. Of the latter, 10 percent are from Catalonia.

The president of the Foundation has also advanced that, looking to the future, they do not rule out open a fourth museum that fluffs up the collection and allows exhibiting works and objects that, for reasons of space, have been stranded in the warehouse. «The institution has bought a lot of work and we do not have it to be stored. We have content, but no continent », he said before pointing out that, if it became a reality, the fourth Dalí museum would be projected in Catalan territory.

The possible extension, however, is still in an almost embryonic process, so the most important thing in the short term is a three-year plan during which internationalization will be worked on, the development of new stories and a greater knowledge of the figures of Gala and Dalí. “Dalí is more valued than accepted”, Merchant said. Paradoxically, the commitment to internalization coincides with the decision to leave large exhibitions around the world and focus on immersive experiences. “Insurance conditions and costs have become very complicated,” argues Mercader, for whom the future lies in finding “new stories.”

In this sense, Mercader has revealed that the Foundation has received an offer from Netflix to make a series. “I would like there to be a film or a series about Dalí, but fulfilling certain conditions and without the objective being to commodify the figure of Dalí”, he has relativized.
