Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 has been a game-changer for Denmark, one of the most Eurosceptic member states of the European Union, which is holding a referendum on Wednesday on lifting the derogation on the policy of common defense and security granted, at its request, by its partners for thirty years. “Faced with an aggressive Russia, we must all stick together within NATO but also within the EU”, hammered during the campaign the Social Democratic Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, arguing vigorously for “strong European defense cooperation in an insecure world where we must participate fully”. “In a continent at war, Denmark is too small to stand alone”, she notes again, urging the Danes to vote yes to show “their solidarity with the European family in the face of an unpredictable enemy”.
