The allergic reaction differs per person, explains dermatologist Thomas Rustemeyer of Amsterdam UMC. Some people will not have any complaints and others will already have a reaction as soon as they come into contact with the substance. These can be blisters, bleeding fissures, breathing problems, eczema, itching or even burns.

Complaints are increasing

Over time, the complaints also increase. “That could be for several reasons. Like that the nails are becoming more and more popular. But whether that is the real reason is difficult to say. The more often the substance comes into contact with the skin, the more you build up the allergy. The greater the exposure, the greater the risk,” says Annebelle Nooteboom, editor-in-chief of Nailed It magazine for nail stylists.

The danger is especially great if the artificial nail does not harden properly. The allergenic substance then comes into continuous contact with the skin, resulting in a very high exposure. The risk is even greater if a nail studio uses products that do not comply with the legislation and that also occurs in the Netherlands.
