Culture returns to what was one of the epicenters of knowledge of our Hispanic Monarchy for centuries. This Saturday, September 30, historians, popularizers and experts will meet in San Lorenzo de El Escorial at the IV Conference on the Black Legend; an event organized by the centenary Peña San Lorenzo and the Ateneo Escurialense with the collaboration of the City Council and which, this year, will focus on the figure Felipe II. Because the monarch had little of a devil with horns and a tail despite the fact that he was known abroad as the ‘Devil of the South’.

«Philip II has undoubtedly been the Spanish monarch who is the epitome of the Black Legend: a sinister, patricidal, intolerant, fanatical, dark subject… who nevertheless was a true prince of the Renaissance, educated and traveled, who promoted science and a true patron. of art, as well as an inveterate bibliophile,” he explains to ABC Javier Santamarta del Pozo, commissioner of the days. In his words, there is no character that better represents what we want to convey in this event. “The reality, no matter how much the opposite has been repeated, is that he was the creator of globalization at a political and economic level and the one who, without a doubt, established the Spanish Monarchy in the Modern Age,” he completes.

This edition – promoted by entities such as the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Community of Madrid or the Spanish University Foundation – will be held in the Auditorium of the Royal College Alfonso XII, located in the same monastery, with capacity for 500 attendees. And it will be done under the guidance of a team of national and international experts in the history of Spain. Among them, the director of the Chair of Spanish and Hispanidad and CSIC researcher, Manuel Lucena Giraldo, or the doctor in History Geoffrey Parker, with whom the audience will connect via videoconference.

Essentially, the day will have five round tables; each of them, focusing on a specific aspect of the Black Legend. Namely: the arts and sciences in the reign of Philip II; the importance of women during periods; the light and dark of the monarch and the Invincible Armada. In this, a lively debate is expected on the true causes that caused the defeat of the fleet and the influence of meteorology on the disaster.

The finishing touch will be the screening of an episode of the Ministry of Time and a Cinema Forum where its creator, Javier Olivares, will be present, along with two other historians, in an open talk about the Spanish past where the public will also be able to participate.
