Dark and surreal, the film by Laura Baumeister de Montis surveys the tragedies of Nicaraguan society.

First, the fog. The film opens on a Dantesque landfill where children are snorting, silhouettes leaping one by one from the mountain of rubbish as if it had just given birth. In this open-air shambles, some people have fun picking up human arms or legs, playing with pieces of dead bodies which a girl dodges without blinking, having come to look for something to feed her puppies. A whole imagery of garbage dumps, dirt, discarded little beings dominates the first film by 39-year-old Nicaraguan Laura Baumeister de Montis. From the slums to the garbage sheds (the plastic that the screen vomits by the kilo is cleaned there), the filmmaker examines, through the eyes of a young heroine with a stubborn face, the renunciations of a country of which we will only see the putrid face, miserable in the crass and heroic sense. Love has everything to do not to suffocate. The one that Maria devotes to her young mother, who will not return from the plantation where she goes to work one day, hovers like a ghost of tenderness. It is the epic tale of a child who refuses to be abandoned, and will leave to find her mother. In French, la Hija de todas las rabias means “the daughter of all anger.” This is the first feature-length fiction film produced and shot in Nicaragua by a local filmmaker, who has indeed expressed her anger, but also surrealist reveries: Alice in Wonderland, without the wonders.

The Daughter of All Rages by Laura Baumeister de Montis. Avec Ara Alejandra Medal, Virginia Raquel Sevilla Garcia, Noé Hernandez… (1h30).
