Who wouldn’t love a new TV show about a complicated relationship between two beautiful people? So say goodbye to HBO’s The Idol, created by Sam Levinson and The Weeknd and starring Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of) alongside The Weeknd. The program in question has not yet aired, and many are already looking forward to it.

Following the success and uproar caused by the series “Euphoria”, Sam Levinson returns and this time collaborates with The Weeknd (also known as Abel Tesfai). In the new series, they are expected to take viewers on a journey described as “the stupidest love story”.

The series has already faced several bumps: for example, in April it was reported that Amy Seimetz had left her role as project manager, after the production had already filmed multiple episodes under her management. Sources indicated that the show would be reworked to accommodate a new creative direction — and thankfully, it happened. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming American drama series.

The show “The Idol” takes place in Hollywood. DeWeekend plays a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult – Jehiz – and develops a complicated relationship with Lily-Rose Depp’s character.

“Their subversive and revealing take on the cult of the music industry is unlike anything HBO has ever done. Soon after, the brilliant duo of Joe Epstein and Amy Seimetz joined forces with the rest of the team, and that dream became a reality,” said Francesca Orsi, a senior vice president at HBO, when the series was first announced.

De Weekend also confirmed that the show is actually a semi-biographical look at his meteoric rise to success in the music industry. There are some elements based on true stories, but the characters and scenarios are fictional.

As mentioned, The Weeknd stars alongside Lily-Rose Depp in two lead roles, but they’re not the only celebrity favorites on the roster. Other notable names include: Troye Sivan (famous YouTuber-turned-singer), Debbie Ryan (American actor), Rachel Snot (comedian), Steve Zisis (“Together”) and Harry Neff (Amazon Original Series, “Transparent”).

Plus, it’s now known that K-pop star Jenny Kim is also making an appearance, thanks to her brief appearance in the newly released trailer for the show. HBO later confirmed Jenny’s participation via Twitter. “Jenny Kim has been cast in #THEIDOL,” it read.

The short but action-packed teaser leverages the definition of “the dumbest love story.” It opened to chants of “lick it, hit it, drop it” and “more, more, more orgy!”. The teaser then launches into a hyperactive montage of Hollywood mansions, colorful parties, cocaine ingestion and fast cars.

In the meantime there is no release date for the series, all we have is the trailer. The Idol was originally slated for release in 2021 but ran into production issues, first reported by Variety. This led HBO to release a statement at the time: “The Idol creative team continues to build, refine and develop their vision for the show, and they have aligned themselves in a new creative direction.” For now, we’ll settle for “soon.”
