The government of Daniel Noboa announced an exceptional action for taxpayers of the Internal Revenue Service (SRI) until July 31, 2024. Those with debts will be able to benefit from the forgiveness of interest, fines and surcharges.

This seventh remission process, established by the Economic Efficiency and Job Creation Law in December 2023, has as its main objective to raise 700 million dollars.

Tax remission allows taxpayers to regularize their tax situation by paying debts with significant reductions in interest and penalties. This mechanism, used for more than 16 years by various governments, seeks not only to clean up outstanding accounts but also to inject liquidity into the treasury.

According to recent data from the SRI, approximately 250 million dollars have been collected between January and June 2024, which represents 35% of the projected goal. More than 550,000 taxpayers have benefited so far, 52% of which are companies and 48% are individuals.

Despite these advances, many large companies have yet to take advantage of this benefit. Damián Larco, director of the SRI, estimates that these companies could contribute up to an additional $130 million, although they will likely wait until the last minute due to cash flow considerations.

A key difference between this remission process and previous ones is that it allows taxpayers to pay the amounts indicated by the SRI individually, without the obligation to pay the entire debt to benefit from tax forgiveness.

Furthermore, taxpayers are not required to waive existing appeal proceedings to qualify for this benefit, and may continue such proceedings legally.

This initiative is framed within the Organic Law on Economic Efficiency and Job Creation and covers tax debts generated until December 31, 2023, excluding income tax for the same year.

The IRS hopes that this measure will encourage more taxpayers to regularize their tax situation, thereby strengthening tax collection and benefiting the State as a whole.
