His birth was a momentous scientific event, becoming the first mammal cloned from an adult cell.

Dolly was born on July 5, 1996 at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland. However, her arrival into the world was announced seven months later, on February 22, 1997, when she was leading a normal life at that government animal science research institute.

Its creation was the result of long work on the nuclear transfer method, a technique that consists of the fusion of enucleated eggs with nuclei of breast cells.

Dolly was the only lamb resulting from 277 fusions carried out. Its genetic material was extracted from the mammary gland of a 6-year-old Finnish-Dorset breed.

The creator scientists Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell named the cloned mammal “Dolly” in honor of American Dolly Parton.

Dolly spent her entire life at the Roslin Institute, where she was crossed with a male specimen to produce six offspring.

In 2001, five years after her birth, the sheep began to develop arthritis and walk with difficulty.

Dolly would have a shorter life than average, she died at 6 and a half years old when the life expectancy for her breed is between 11 and 12 years.

She was euthanized on February 14, 2003 due to progressive lung disease. The decision was made for safety reasons, as her condition posed a risk to the rest of the flock.

The necropsy revealed that the sheep had a form of lung cancer, a common disease in sheep, and researchers found no connection between its premature death and the fact that it was cloned.

The Roslin Institute also established that being born with a genetic age of 6 years was not a determining factor in premature aging.

The stuffed remains of Dolly the sheep are currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland.

On February 14, 2003, Dolly the sheep, the first cloned animal, died.
