Brazilian authorities confirmed that the heavy rains that fell on the south of the country in recent days and the catastrophic floods and landslides they caused left 29 dead and at least 60 missing.

Governor Eduardo Leite said, “This is the worst climate disaster ever to hit his border state with both Uruguay and Argentina.”

He added: “I would like to express my deep regret for all the lives we have lost. There are 29 deaths currently recorded, and I know with great pain that there will be more” deaths, especially in light of the presence of 60 people missing.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, to which President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promised to provide government aid, the damage is spreading as far as the eye can see, from massive landslides to homes and cars sinking under water, to rescue operations taking place under extremely difficult and risky conditions.
