American authorities announced that the death toll from Hurricane Helen had reached at least 63 people, and rescuers blocked by closed roads and bridges searched for survivors in homes in several states in the south and east of the United States.

Emergency crews are trying to restore power and deal with the aftermath of the hurricane, which flooded roads, homes and warehouses and destroyed many.
Toll based on data from local authorities said at least 24 people were killed in South Carolina, 17 in Georgia, 11 in Florida, 10 in North Carolina, and one person in Virginia.
The US National Hurricane Center said that “conditions will continue to improve after the devastating flooding of the past two days.”
Hurricane Helen made landfall in northwest Florida on Thursday afternoon, reaching Category 4 on a five-degree scale, with winds blowing at speeds of 225 kilometers per hour.
A federal emergency has been declared in six states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, and more than 800 FEMA personnel have been deployed to assist local officials.
