The decision to increase the price of gas and electricity by executive order is cancelled

On Tuesday (August 27), the President promulgated the ‘Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’.

This draft ordinance was approved in the meeting of the advisory council of the interim government on 22nd of this month. As a result, section 34(a) of increasing the price of fuel oil, gas and electricity has been abolished in the executive order by amending the ‘Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003’.

According to the Gazette, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission has issued an ordinance repealing Act 34(a). Henceforth it shall be known as ‘Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (Amendment) Ordinance-2024’. As per Section ‘A’ of Section 34 of this Act, the Government has the power to fix, refix or adjust the tariff. As this clause has been abolished, the government will no longer be able to determine the price of electricity and gas without a public hearing.

A BERC official said that due to the amendment of the law, the price of electricity and gas was fixed by BERC earlier, now the price should be increased through the public hearing of BERC.
