The decline in industrial production accelerated in April, the press service of the Department of Statistics told BNS on Monday, according to which the country’s industrial enterprises produced in April 2023 products at constant prices by 15.1% less than in the same month of 2022.

Production decreased in all three sectors – in energy by 22.0%, in manufacturing by 14.7% and in mining by 9.1%.

According to Helle Bunder, a leading analyst at the Department of Statistics, industrial output fell in April in almost all sectors of the manufacturing industry. “Among the most significant industries, growth was observed only in the production of shale oil (2.4%), as well as in the production of vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (12.8%),” said Helle Bunder. Among the most significant sectors, the reduction, as in the previous month, was in the processing of wood (24.0%), the volumes also decreased in the production of electrical equipment (6.8%) and metal products (9.0%). A slight decrease was also observed in the production of electronic equipment (2.3%) and food (1.4%).

Compared to April 2022, sales of products in the manufacturing industry decreased in April 2023 at current prices and according to calendar adjusted data by 11.9%. Sales of products in the domestic market decreased by 14.1%, sales for export – by 10.5%.

66.8% of the total volume of manufacturing products was sold on the foreign market.

According to seasonally adjusted data, in April 2023, the total volume of industrial production decreased by 1.4% compared to March, and in the manufacturing industry by 1.5%.

In the energy sector, electricity production quantitatively (MWh) decreased by 27.4% compared to April 2022, and heat production by 18.1%.

Industry is the largest sector of the economy and an important engine of economic growth. The industrial production index covers the economic performance of three sectors: mining, energy and manufacturing.

Statistics Estonia collects and analyzes data for the statistical work “Industrial output index” commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to obtain an overview of the current situation in the Estonian economy.
