The Dejvice Theater will have a new artistic director from 2025. It will be directed by Jiří Havelka. He replaces Martin Myšička, who will remain a member of the cast. Together with the new director, dramaturg Marta Ljubková, with whom Havelka has been cooperating for a long time, will come to the Prague stage.

Havelka in Dejvice directed the play Černá díra for the first time in 2007, so far last year he tried the title Battle of Hernani by Victor Hugo. It was his fifth project here.

“I was able to experience rehearsals at the Dejvice Theater several times, and each time it was a completely unique encounter. The ensemble was in a different phase, I was at a different age, the way the production was born was very different, but one thing was repeated each time. It was a time filled with discovery, testing , searching, bumping into and colliding, time spent intensively and playfully,” says Havelka.

“When this offer appeared, I was filled with joy and fear, because the Dejvické Theater is truly a phenomenon, which brings challenges in many directions. But after a while, the anticipation of the adventurous journey completely prevailed,” adds the forty-three-year-old native of Jihlava, known to the wider public as director of the films Owners or Extraordinary Event. This summer, he will release a new feature film called The Gardener’s Year starring Oldřich Kaiser and Dáša Vokata.

Havelka replaces Martin Myšička as artistic director of the Dejvice scene. “From the first moment when the troupe asked me to become the artistic director in the fall of 2016, I saw it as a transition period to maintain the continuity of the theater. And now the moment has come for a smooth handover,” he comments change Mouse.

He wants to focus more on acting. “And Jiří Havelka, whom I approached, because he has all the competences and prerequisites for this post and will certainly bring new impulses to the theater, he himself says that today he too is in a situation where this challenge resonates with him very much,” adds Martin Myšička.

In the already planned 2024/2025 season, the Dejvické Theater will present two new titles, one directed by the young director and new dramaturg of the theater Kateřina Volánková, the other directed by Jan Frič. At the end of the season, the home scene will be renovated, which will increase the auditorium by 50 seats.

Lukáš Průdek, who previously headed the South Bohemian Theater, has been the director since January of this year. The Prague scene recently drew attention to itself again with a live broadcast of the production Elegance of Molecules, which was seen by 28,814 viewers in cinemas across the country.

Jiří Havelka studied direction of alternative and puppet theater at the DAMU in Prague after Jihlava grammar school. Already during his studies, he started acting and directing on the small Ypsilonka stage. He is also one of the members of the Vosto5 cabaret theater, which became famous for its author’s productions, the basic building block of which is usually improvisation.
