The Social Insurance Department has begun making extra payments for family benefits, the agency’s press office told BNS on Friday.

According to the Law on Family Allowances, which came into force on February 1, retrospectively, additional payments of family allowance rates are required from the beginning of the current year.

The first co-payments are received by parents raising a child alone. During May, large families and recipients of benefits for the first and second child will receive additional payments.

“Since benefits were paid at the old, lower rates in January, the Social Insurance Department will make additional transfers to all recipients of family benefits for January. First of all, payments will be made to single parents, explains Pirjo Künnapuu, head of the area of family benefits of the Social Insurance Board. – Since there are many recipients of benefits, we will make additional payments gradually. Families with many children and recipients of benefits for the first and second child should not worry, they will receive the difference between the rates due to them at the latest during May.”

According to the law that came into force on 1 February, the allowance for a single parent is 80 euros, which is 60.82 euros more than last year. Almost 10,000 people receive this type of benefit in Estonia. In January, 20 euros will be paid for the first and second child, 350 euros for large families with 3-6 children, and 450 euros for families with 7 or more children.
