Wearing a tie in the Assembly: “The clothes do not make the deputy”, answers La France insoumise

“The clothes do not make the MP”wrote the group of deputies of La France insoumise (LFI) on Friday in a letter to the presidency of the National Assembly, asking him not to impose the tie in the hemicycle, as demanded the day before the deputy Les Republicans (LR) and quaestor Eric Ciotti.

In this letter, the president of the “rebellious” deputies, Mathilde Panot, and the deputy Alexis Corbière recall that “MPs must reflect the image of the people, their hopes and their indignation, and not be marginalized”. “To love the Republic and parliamentary representation is to ensure that those who have the honor of being parliamentarians resemble the people”they insist.

They respond with this letter to the letter sent the day before by Eric Ciotti, who asked the President of the Assembly “the obligation to wear a tie” in the Hemicycle, wishing “to prevent certain deputies, in particular from La France insoumise, from allowing themselves to wear more and more relaxed outfits within the Hemicycle”seeing a “mark of respect due to our institutions and our compatriots”.

For LFI, in 2022, “wearing a tie is no longer commonplace attire”but in the contrary, “the clothing brand of a very particular social category, generally the most affluent men”even though “French people, more modest, still wear it out of taste or obligation”. They also recall that during the previous term of office, “In particular at the initiative of LFI parliamentarians, it has been definitively established that deputies were no longer obliged to wear a tie”.

“Why ask deputies to somehow disguise themselves as another social class than the one from which they come and which they wish to represent? »they support, while acknowledging that “several of (…) “rebellious” colleagues currently wear ties in the Hemicycle. But it cannot be compulsory..

Snub to the mail of Mr. Ciotti, the deputy LFI Louis Boyard, he claimed the presidency “the ban on costumes at indecent prices”regretting that some “allow themselves to wear more and more expensive outfits in the Hemicycle”. “The costumes of deputies, the price of which sometimes exceeds the amount of a minimum wage, reflect a deplorable vision of our National Assembly (…) with regard to poverty in our country”he denounces in his letter.
