Inés Sabanés leaves the first political line. The deputy of Más País for Verdes Equo and former Councilor for the Environment of the Government of Manuela Carmena will not contest the next general elections on July 23, as confirmed by Sabanés herself to elDiario.es. It is a “personal” decision that was made before, but that has been accelerated with the electoral call. “I will maintain if any help or support activity is necessary on a timely basis, but nothing institutional or representative,” explains the Equo leader to this newsroom.

Sabanés entered the Más País list in the 2019 electoral repetition as a candidate for Equo, after both formations reached a coalition agreement after a consultation with the bases that led to the break between the green party and United We Can. Sabanés ranked number three on Íñigo Errejón’s list, but the resignation of Marta Higueras, who was her number two, brought her back to Congress 20 years later.

From Verdes Equo they explain that it is “a personal decision that was already made before the electoral advance.” “She has been a grandmother and feels that it is time to make way for other profiles within the party,” they explain from the environmentalist group. “In any case, Inés Sabanés is not leaving politics, but she will continue to be active in Verdes Equo and will support the next electoral campaign. She has had a public service role for years and she will continue to do so, not from institutional politics but by contributing her experience to Verdes Equo and the space for progressive and green change ”, she adds.

The leaders of Verdes Equo thus leave the front line of politics after almost three decades holding institutional positions. Sabanés (Cubells, 1953) has traveled through the different administrations both at the national, regional and municipal level. She was a national deputy between 1996-1999 with Izquierda Unida, a councilor in the opposition in the Madrid City Council for the same formation between 1999 and 2007, a regional deputy and spokesperson in the Madrid Assembly between 2007 and 2011 and a government councilor with Ahora Madrid ( 2015-2019) as Environment and Mobility delegate.

Sabanés was one of the members of the Government of Manuela Carmena who had the most prominence during the legislature as she was the promoter of Madrid Central, the measure that restricts traffic in the center of the capital.
